As formidable as frontman Jeff Tweedy's catalog is, the sonically inventive rock band really stands out on stage — the place where extreme technical skill meets the chemistry and rousing showmanship of passionate rock veterans. Of course, it helps that the group has the luxury of drawing highlights from seven very different records when it performs. To see Wilco on stage is to hear the best of the best.”

...At least that was the case until another bust out cover, "Nights in White Satin," came to fruition. This original Moody Blues tune had not been played in 2,422 shows, or since 10/9/87, whichever is easier to grasp. The bluesy rendition was filled with the raspy vocals of Bell repeating, "Oh, how I love you" as though he was paying tribute to the attentive, fun loving, and long enduring crowd.

...In the middle of all this, there was still room for another bust out that again paid tribute to the band that started it all, the Grateful Dead, and a cover that had not seen the light of day since 1989, "New Speedway Boogie."

With the particularly telling line, "I don't know but I've been told it's hard to run with the weight of gold, on the other hand I've heard it said it's just as hard with the weight of lead," it was as though Widespread was summing up their career and moreover life itself.

...The show would close with a seldom-seen double encore consisting of Neil Young's "Don't Be Denied" followed by "Postcard," "Driving Song > "Breathing Slow" and the traditional "Porch Song." It was a classy way of finishing up what will certainly be looked upon as an epic run in the Classic City.

As the first set of the anniversary tour was underway it was clear that this initial performance had not been forgotten.

..."This Cruel Thing," a song by the recently deceased Vic Chesnutt was played with elegance, and Boston's female vocals truly added to the song's emotional depth.

The rest of the night was filled with well played classic songs like "Jack," "Space Wrangler" and "Coconut," but nobody was prepared for the bubbly bass line that came out of the lateral drum interplay between Sunny Ortiz and Todd Nance. The Grateful Dead's "Fire on the Mountain," a bomb that slapped the crowd across the face, had not been played since 10/2/88. ... Front man John Bell came with a full out "Fire on the Mountain" rap as Jimmy Herring's guitar wailed as if he was harnessing Jerry Garcia, while Dave Schools held down the low end with his wizardry on the bass.

...This veteran outfit was not only out to celebrate a career, but to do so in a manner that demonstrated a retrospective glance and provided evidence that nothing has been lost in the long strides and shorts sprints that span a quarter of a century....

I can't say for sure who is playing at this gig with Charlie, except for reliable saxophone sidekick John Ellis -- Seattle saxman Skerik joins the band for a long encore jam that is a highlight of the show.

...April 13, 2003 - A snappy new CD by the Charlie Hunter Quintet called Right Now Move on Ropeadope Records features harmonica, sax, trombone, drums, and some tasty staccato guitar chords underpinned by a funky bass line — but there's no bass player listed in the liner notes.

...The 35-year-old player grew up in the San Francisco Bay area playing a more typical six-string guitar, taking lessons at age 14 from master guitarist Joe Satriani. But Hunter's interest in the complex jazz of players like Joe Pass and Tuck Andress led him to the conclusion that six strings just weren't enough.

His current band includes: harmonica player Gregoire Maret, who has played with Branford Marsalis and Jacky Terrasson; sax/bass clarinet player John Ellis, who's played with Jason Marsalis; trombone player Curtis Fowlkes, best known for his work with John Lurie's Lounge Lizards; and drummer Derek Philips, who has collaborated with jazz musicians Greg Osby and Joshua Redman.

...Hunter rarely solos on guitar — he says he likes to groove in tight-but-funky compositions that best play off the true ensemble nature of the group.

...He was a proponent of the "hip hop" or "acid jazz" movement that hit the Bay Area in the mid-90s, mixing jazz with funk, hip-hop and rock. ... Hunter credits musicians Jimmy Smith and Larry Young, both organ players, as huge influences on his style — Young in particular, because of the way Young would play bass lines with his left hand and chords and melodies with his right.

<itunes:author>Charlie Hunter Quartet</itunes:author><itunes:keywords>charlie hunter, jazz, jazz alley, jazz podcast, funk podcast, charlie hunter quartet, charlie hunter live, dj fundi, podcast cafe</itunes:keywords><itunes:subtitle>Down in the groove pocket, feels so good</itunes:subtitle><itunes:summary>Here's a Charlie Hunter show at Seattle's Jazz Alley that I recorded on my minidisc way back in 2003. It features Blind Pilot, Iron & Wine, Blitzen Trapper, Feist, Bon Iver and The Decemberists. All but the Iron & Wine concert, which is from 2005, are recent concerts from the past few months. I love the freak folk renaissance of acoustic-based music with lots of moodiness, wit and beauty, and these bands are just about the best in that genre. Enjoy!

(That is, if by warmth you mean bleak heartbreak, dark realizations and uncomfortable vulnerability.) Iron and Wine continues to wring inventive sounds and compelling emotions out of the American folk-music form, as it demonstrated at Folk Festival 50 on Saturday.

Iron and Wine's latest collection, Around the Well, compiles two discs' worth of B-sides, soundtrack and compilation tracks and previously unreleased goodies. Even though Beam's debut album, The Creek Drank the Cradle, was released only seven years ago, the new album is a reminder of just how far Iron and Wine has come. It's easy to hear the progression from self-recorded four-track folk to full-blown rock, especially in the unexpected likes of the Middle Eastern-inspired "Arms of a Thief."

Enter a police escort that found her car and escorted her all the way backstage, with roughly 30 seconds to spare. That wasn't long enough for Welch to put in her contact lenses, so she went without. She faced the blurry, 9,000-plus crowd — and the boats anchored in the distance — with her longtime performing partner David Rawlings beside her.

It's been years since Welch has put out a new album or performed frequently, but she's a fixture at the Newport Folk Festival no matter what. With Rawlings at her side Saturday, Welch treated fans to many of her classics — each drenched in the pair's trademark close harmonies — and threw in a reverb-drenched cover of Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" for good measure.

Welch first surfaced on the pop-cultural radar with her 1996 debut, Revival, which transported fans back to the 1920s while maintaining a foot in the present. ... She followed that album with more full-length releases, as well as appearances on several soundtracks, such as Songcatcher and the chart-topping O, Brother, Where Art Thou? Both albums placed Welch and Rawlings squarely in the middle of the traditional American folk revival.

The Seattle band pairs layers of harmonized vocals — the sort of sound that could have emerged from the 1920s or the 1970s — with shuffling drums and finger-picked guitars. In keeping with the band's name, the record's song titles ("Meadowlarks," "Blue Ridge Mountains," "Ragged Wood") suggest a bucolic vision of nature, though lead singer Robin Pecknold's lyrics occasionally hint at violence ("And Michael you would fall / and turn the white snow red / as strawberries in summertime," from "White Winter Hymnal").

Fleet Foxes' members spent the majority of 2008 on the road before taking a break to work on a follow-up to their debut. The band's performances in 2009 have been fewer but higher in profile: It played Saturday Night Live in January and Coachella in April. Currently on tour, Fleet Foxes played the All Points West festival at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, N.J., the day before taking the stage at Newport.

His amazing technique and improvisational skills have earned praise from straight-ahead jazz critics and fans. His willingness to experiment musically is looked upon with great favor by devotees of the avant-garde. And his ability to dig into a big, nasty groove and then run away with it has made him a favorite with jam-band audiences.

No matter what sort of music he plays, his amazing technique has been Hunter's calling card since he started recording in the mid-1990s. Armed with a seven-string guitar, he possesses the unique ability to sound like at least two guitarists at once, as he seems to play bass lines, melody lines, chords and improvisational passages at the same time.

However, as he tells KPLU's Nick Francis in this session, he feels that he's taken technique as far as he can. Hunter jokes that, at a certain point in the recent past, he felt that the only thing he could do to outdo himself on stage would be to set himself on fire. Since he was understandably hesitant to take such a drastic step, he began to re-think the music he was playing and the reasons he wanted to play music in the first place.

His conclusion, as you'll hear, was that he'd spent enough of his career in the service of technique — and that it was now time to serve the music. The solo guitar pieces he plays in this interview clearly demonstrate the fruits of Hunter's new path."

--88.5 KPLU FM

www.podcastcafe.org/livearchive
djfundi@podcastcafe.org</itunes:summary>

Bon Iver * 9.10.08 * MySpace Transmission

(null)

<itunes:author>Bon Iver @ www.PodcastCafe.org/livearchive</itunes:author><itunes:category text="music"/><itunes:keywords>bon iver, podcast cafe, live music</itunes:keywords><itunes:summary>Loving all-things-Bon-Iver these days, and his debut album For Emma, Long Ago, is just too short! It is a perfect and complete recording that satisfies me in so many ways, but at less than 40 minutes, I am always left wanting more when the last track fades. After a tentative start, Fleet Foxes seemed to find their collective voice, opening with "Sun Giant," the title track to the band's EP, released earlier this year on the Sub Pop label.

...The members of Fleet Foxes like to say they're not much of a rock band, but they are one of the year's breakout acts. ... It's both a revival and a reinvention of roots music, with inspired attention given to melody and harmony.

Fleet Foxes' sound can be traced directly to the music the band members' parents played: The Beach Boys, Simon and Garfunkel, The Zombies, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Crosby Stills and Nash.

..."All we strove for with this record was to make something that was an honest reflection of who we are, citizens of the western United States who love all kinds of music and above all else love singing."

...After playing a number of live shows, and with the help of credit cards a tip money, they recorded and self-released an EP that same year. They followed in Feb. 2008 with the EP Sun Giant and their full-length debut in June, both on Sub Pop."

The lovely "Hard to Imagine" bled into "Corduroy," then the outtake "All Night" showed up for the first time in history to test the song-recognition skills of everyone present. ... "Elderly Woman..." was its usual en masse effort (Hel-LOOOOOOOO), and by the time things reached "Severed Hand"-- a newish track now warm and familiar-- Ed was coated in sweat, his Boy Scout uniform shirt soaked through as he reached out, imploring the audience to join him on whatever emotional plane he'd found. On "1/2 Full," he pulled out my favorite Vedder trick: using his guitar as a mirror to reflect a stage spotlight out into the crowd, holding the exploding beacon above his head like He-Man's rock n' roll sword.

From the platform above the stage, the crowd was a literal rainbow of orange, red, yellow, green lights, faces and arms outstretched all the way back to the arch that marks the farthest spot on the mainstage field, at least a three-minute golf cart ride away. ... do they have the hand gestures up and running?-- and amazingly, I think most in attendance were just here because it's Bonnaroo, and Pearl Jam are something to see. ... "Music cannot make change," he said at one point, saying it was instead the right and responsibility of each and every one of us to change our world.

...Further snippets from the show stand out: the cover of "Reign O'er Me" that got me psyched for VH1 Rock Honors, and whose violent beauty I have decided to rename "Rain On Me" and dedicate to MMJ; the 4-minute breakdown in the middle of "Rearviewmirror" that reminded me the second word in this band's name is, after all, "jam"; Ed comparing the crowd to Amsterdam ("If you told me to f--- off in Dutch right now, I wouldn't be surprised"); hearing "W.M.A." live. Eventually, because I am an extraordinarily lucky girl and the Pearl Jam staff are the nicest people on the planet, I found myself on the side of the stage, able to look out from the band's perspective and gasp at the sea of lighters that appeared during the opening chords of "Betterman."

<itunes:author>DJ Fundi @ www.PodcastCafe.org</itunes:author><itunes:keywords>music podcast, dj podcast, pearl jam podcast, bonnaroo podcast</itunes:keywords><itunes:summary>The second set from Pearl Jam's epic performance at Bonnaroo 2008, featuring "Black," "Porch," "Crazy Mary," "Alive," "All Along the Watchtower" and more.

Set one and a solo concert by Eddie Vedder available for download or stream at www.podcastcafe.org/livearchive. The band wowed fans with a fiery take on the Who's "Love, Reign o'er Me," and during "Daughter" Vedder even threw in a portion of the English Beat's "Save It for Later." The outtake "All Night" was played for the first time ever, while "W.M.A." made its first complete live appearance in 13 years.

Pearl Jam's appearance at Bonnaroo marked just its second U.S. festival date since nine fans were crushed to death during its 2000 set at Denmark's Roskilde Festival.

...With Pearl Jam having just begun a short U.S. tour that was built around Bonnaroo, Vedder expressed shock at picking up the daily newspapers in each city and finding little to no media coverage of the war in Iraq.

He later dedicated the song "No More" to friend Tomas Young, the paralyzed Iraq War vet featured in the new film "Body of War." Amid the war continuing, Young's health has taken a turn for the worse in the past couple of weeks, and Vedder admitted that has made it "a lot harder to be happy" these days.

But the band still drew and sustained one of the biggest main-stage crowds ever seen at Bonnaroo, the masses stretching well beyond those who showed up to see Metallica the night before. ... In between songs, when he glimpsed just how far back the crowd extended, he thanked the audience a second time for listening.

...Accompanied with an arsenal of guitars, ukuleles, a banjo, and an amplified footboard, Vedder's set was a far-reaching collection of solo tunes from the Into The Wild soundtrack, unreleased songs and covers, with only a handful of standard Pearl Jam tunes -- and many of those deep cuts from the back catalog.

...I would have liked to see a little bit more changeup from night to night, as there are so many great songs he could have explored, but I am not complaining.

The soaring "I Am Mine" is a favorite song, and it was gorgeous to hear early on in the night, as was the rare "Dead Man" from the Penn film soundtrack (Sean Penn was there both nights, I hear). ... The rarely heard "I'm Open" from 1996's No Code was played as a modified version that left out the spoken word bit about a man lying in bed in a room with no door (good call there, Ed).

...During the explanation of the West Memphis Three situation (tickets were auctioned off for each show to support their legal defense fund), Ed led into the extremely rare song "Satellite" that I had never even heard before Monday night, saying it was written for the wife of one of the West Memphis Three, Damien Echols.

...Despite Ed's requests for mitigation of the constant barrage of comments from the small crowd, the living room feel proved too enticing for many who wanted a chance to converse with their idol in that quiet setting. Vedder first quoted Tom Waits in a gruff imitation, saying Waits had once revealed to him that "silence is like a blank piece of paper," then later telling the yellers a bit more blatantly to "shut the fuck up," to little avail.

...One guy did yell after "Guaranteed" that Ed should've won an Academy Award, to which Ed humorously mused that he had been watching VH1 'I Love the 80s' special recently, and had seen that the Ghostbusters theme won an Oscar in 1985.

<itunes:author>DJ Fundi @ www.podcastcafe.org</itunes:author><itunes:category text="music"/><itunes:keywords>eddie vedder</itunes:keywords><itunes:subtitle>Solo performance at Zellerbach Hall at UC-Berkeley</itunes:subtitle>

The B-52's * 1982 * Montego Bay, Jamaica

As a bonus, we've included three tracks from "Funplex" at the end of the concert, as well as another archival track, the terminally weird song "Quiche Lorraine" from 1980's "Wild Planet."

The New York Times has a good story called "The Return of the Rock Lobsters" on the making of Funplex and the general B-52's mojo. You can read it here.

Few singers as skilled as Sharon Jones at stuffing notes with ache and meaning might be willing to invest in a sound so fully occupied by the likes of Bettye LaVette and Tina Turner in the Ike years, too. But what Jones brings to the funkified table has legs of its own -- eight of them, to be exact -- and they belong to Binky Griptite, Bugaloo Velez, Homer Steinweiss, and Dave Guy -- her Dap-Kings.

Jones, like James Brown, was born in Augusta, GA; there she sang in her church choir, and from fellow parishioners picked up the kind of back-patting she needed to convince her to go mainstream. As a teenager, she moved with her family to Brooklyn, where she immersed herself in 1970s disco and funk with an eye toward cutting a record of her own. Instead, studios came calling and with them steady work -- by her twenties, Jones was turning in backup vocals for gospel, soul, disco and blues artists, most of it uncredited.

In the '80s, however, Jones' sound was deemed unfashionable, and instead of pushing ahead with her soul diva's dream she went back to church singing. ... With that label's house band, the Soul Providers, Jones released several singles in the late '90s; their warmth and genuineness propelled the act across the Atlantic, and Jones picked up a moniker -- the queen of funk -- that stuck.

...With it, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings proved that, no matter how late in the game, they are hell-bent on breathing life back into boiled-down funk and soul.

<itunes:author>DJ Fundi</itunes:author><itunes:keywords>sharonjones, funk, soul, dappkings</itunes:keywords><itunes:subtitle>More goodies from the Podcast Cafe's Live Archive</itunes:subtitle>

Iron & Wine * 11.4.07 * Bellingham

(null)

<itunes:author>DJ Fundi & Sunnyland Soundsystem</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>Iron & Wine at the Mount Baker Theater in Bellingham, WA on Nov. 4, 2007 touring behind "The Shepard's Dog"</itunes:subtitle>

Beastie Boys * 7.14.07 * St. Poelten

(null)

<itunes:subtitle>Beastie Boys perform live in Austria, July 2007</itunes:subtitle>

Bill Frisell & Greg Leisz * 2/14/07 * Bellingham

"Quaint yet bracingly stimulating, guitarists Bill Frisell and Greg Leisz have developed a rapport that appears to envelope all the good things about instrumental duets. They back each other up, present fascinating melodic passages, echo each other's lines, push each other to the outside of a tune and then rein each other in -- these two do everything except flashy solos. And in a setting such as Largo that demands audience focus (Frisell's L.A. gigs often are not on a mainstream routing map), Frisell may have found the best place possible to present his eclectic yet often hushed music.

Their program of largely improvised music displayed an indebtedness to 1930s country, '60s rock, '70s experimentalism and a few periods in between, with Frisell alternating between electric and acoustic guitars while Leisz played several guitars held on the lap and played flat with a slide.

After starting with sounds that alternated between church bells and derivations of a busy phone signal, Frisell switched his guitar to a more standard sound, allowing Leisz to sweep in on pedal steel and provide a Hawaiian cowboy texture. Each piece had its own exotic combination of flavors -- a little distortion, a rumbling reverb, a very bright use of the dobro -- as the men countered each other's moves with gentleness and elegance.

...It's not far from Frisell's bailiwick -- even though he was once named artist of the year by jazz publication Down Beat -- and it should be a stunner on par with his "Nashville" disc. Leisz, whose resume includes stints in the bands of Dave Alvin and k.d. lang plus countless L.A. sessions, joined Frisell's quintet for 1999's "Good Dog, Happy Man" and his presence here certainly accounted for the abundance of country flavorings. It has long been a mystery why Leisz, who plays so many instruments so well, hasn't been inked to a solo deal, even if only for one record like, say, the L.A. studio legend of the 1950s and '60s, Lloyd Glenn.

<itunes:author>DJ Fundi & Sunnyland Soundsystem</itunes:author><itunes:category text="music"/><itunes:subtitle>Guitar wizards Bill Frisell & Greg Leisz make mellow magic together at this intimate Valentine's Day show</itunes:subtitle>
