Acoustica VI: Cloudy, with a Chance of Sunbreaks

I just found this lost Acoustica mix deep in the Podcast Cafe vaults and have been listening to it every time I need a mellow, strumming groove. I find it both soothing and melancholy, one of my favorite combinations, and I thought I’d share it with you. It feels especially appropriate because just today, I found out that I lost a friend -- he perished in a boat fire with his wife in the marina on Bellingham Bay last week, but I didn’t know I was connected to this tragedy until today, via the news on the radio driving to work. I was half-tuned in until I heard the newscaster say his last name. The news has me dazed and sad, and this particular mix of music has been speaking to me today. None of these songs are about Jim and Sterling in particular, but it is a downtempo set with themes of loss, loving and renewal, and so I dedicate it to both of their memories.

I mixed “Acoustica 6: cloudy, with a chance of sunbreaks” 2 years ago, on the day before my birthday, when I was a single and somewhat lonely man living on Samish Island. It was mixed in one-take with no overdubs or chapters, and features a roster of what long-time listeners and fans of
the Acoustica series can now deduce to be Podcast Cafe All-Stars: Bill Frisell, Josh Ritter, Laura Veirs, Elliott Smith, Cowboy Junkies, Uncle Tupelo, Andrew Bird, JJ Cale, Gillian Welch, Elvis Perkins, Jerry Garcia, (bellingham’s own) Robert Blake, Beck, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel (covering Bon Iver!?!), Nirvana and The Rolling Stones.

Dwellingham (Acoustica 4)

This is a mix of music made as anticipation for moving off of the island and back up to Bellingham grows, with thoughts of nesting, family, cedar trees and grounding in heart. Mostly it is a collection of my favorite songs of this season of the mellowish, acoustic-based, beard-folk, often melancholy, always moving variety. These are the tunes I find myself listening to over, over & over again in the winter of 2010-2011.

The mix features Adam Hurst, Tallest Man on Earth, Iron & Wine, The Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens, The Black Keys, Aloe Blacc, Sade, Mumford & Sons, Carlina Chocolate Drops, Cowboy Junkies, Neil Young, Band of Bees, Band of Horses, Josh Ritter, Robert Plant's Band of Joy, Laura Veirs, Ray LaMontagne & the Pariah Dogs, Sharon Van Etten and others.
