Kalimba Chai : Little Prayers
2760553103

I made this here mix with the idea of exploring sacred music from Africa, the Middle East and India. I tried to keep a sublime, introspective vibe pulsing through this diverse array of selections, which include field recordings from villages on the Nile River, traditional music from Iran, Armenian chanting, drum circles, world beat fusion from Pakistan and Ethiopia and a survey of Malian masters like Bouboucar Traore, Oumou Sangare and Toumani Diabate. The journey begins and ends with hypnotic sounds made on the kalimba, or "thumb piano," opening with a track from Samite and closing with Bobby McFerrin.

I hope this swirling mix of continent-spanning music from the soul inspires your own internal journeys.

Egg Radio : Bill Frisell, reconstructed

A few years back, back before the dawn of digital music technologies, DJ Fundi threw together a loose mix of Bill Frisell's music and burned it painstakingly to a CD, something he called "The Bill Frisell Mixdown".

Andy, aka the NOBLE Tea Troll, loved it. Dancing Dog loved it. The Marce loved it. I loved it. That was enough to call it an aural success story.

But here, in the dawn of 2007, times are different. Strange even, and intense. Correspondingly, this episode of the Podcast Cafe ain't your mama's Frisell. No, ma'am. In this postmodern sound reconstruction, DJ Fundi rifles through the major works of Bill Frisell's catalog since 1995 or so -- and a prodigious catalog it is -- and susses his way through a dozen studio albums, 2 ilicit live recordings, a download-only release and a few mystery tracks.

Fundi surprises even hisself with this continuous sound blend, intoxicated with the many moods of Frisell's emotive guitar playing. Deep in the bowels of the mix, Fundi came upon the vision of Frisell's creations as paintings, and he saw his mix efforts as a sonic collage of bits and pieces of Frisell's artwork.

Listen then, preferably with headphones on yer head, to the exquisite expressions of a masterly painter who swirls sounds and colors with his trusty 5-string, and float away on the nearly-cinematic musical journey prepared special for you by the good folks down at Podcast Cafe. Many realms lie ahead.

At the behest of NASA (and the NSC, FDA and BLM), DJ Fundi was asked to design recording gear customized for the International Space Station. Presently, with the covert spacemikes firmly duct-taped to a side flange at the base of enormous infrared panels, the Podcast Cafe is able to monitor, record and remix vast worlds of sound as gathered by the cosmic collector intake mechanisms. Not Officially, of course, but we've got a downlink nonetheless.

And so patient listeners, for the first time ever in the history of humankind, we humbly present for your aural curiousity a digital postcard gathered from the eternal reaches of outer space.

Taking the new Sunnyland Studios integrated soundsystem out for a test drive, we’ve concocted a 20+ minute groove sampler to see what she is capable of. With flavors from Bill Frisell, Jorane, Boards of Canada, Anour Brahem and DJ Cheb i Sabbah, I think you will be scintillated by this atmospheric taste test. Hosted by the ever-mysterious DJ Fundi. Enjoy, and better yet, subscribe for future journeys.
